RVCC Rotaract Club Volunteers Help Pack over 50,000 Meals for People in Africa

BRANCHBURG, NJ - Students in Raritan Valley Community College’s Rotaract Club joined with community organizations and individuals recently to pack more than 50,000 meals to be sent to people living in Ebola-stricken areas on the African continent.

During the seven-hour event, organized by the RVCC Rotaract Club with assistance from Rise Against Hunger, students were joined by more than 250 volunteers including members of three area Rotary Clubs; three Rotaract Clubs (Rotary members 18-30 years old); three Interact Clubs (Rotary members under 18); Rotary officials and District Rotary Governors; state Sen. Kip Bateman; RVCC faculty, staff and students; area Boy Scouts; religious and community groups; friends and family.

RVCC Rotaract Club president Manuel Ramirez of Bound Brook led the group’s fundraising efforts to prepare for the event. Under his leadership, the club raised approximately $15,000 through donations, bake sales and other fundraising efforts. In the past three years, more than 110,000 meals have been packed and shipped to Africa.

As members of the College’s Rotaract Club, students are given the opportunity to serve the community and learn about leadership, civic engagement and responsible citizenship. The club tackles hands-on service projects to create positive change in the community.
