Snow or No Snow - Somerset County Offers Cross Country Skiing Instructions

BASKING RIDGE, NJ – The Somerset County Park Commission will offer “Introduction to Cross Country Skiing” at the Environmental Education Center, 190 Lord Stirling Road on Saturday, Jan. 6 from 1:30-3 p.m.

The program is geared to all ages from 10 years and older. Children must be accompanied by a parent.

 Participants will get a head start on the skiing season, learning about the art and sport of cross-country skiing. The discussion will include equipment, clothing, pre-conditioning, safety procedures, and places to ski. A short video illustrating ski technique will also be shown.

The instructional program does not require snow. Fee is $11 per adult and $9 per youth and senior. Registration is available online at www.somersetcountyparks.org or by calling 908-766-2489. Advance payment is required.

The Environmental Education Center has several miles of trails suitable for cross-country skiing when weather conditions permit. The trails are mostly level and wide, making this beautifully rustic area particularly suitable for beginners or novice skiers. The facility is open every day from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. except holidays. Skiers are encouraged to bring a partner or friend and not ski alone. Skiing is only permitted when there is more than four inches of snow on the trails.

Cross Country Skiing is also available at Spooky Brook Golf Course on Elizabeth Avenue in Franklin Township daily from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Call 908 873-2242 for further information.
