SOMERVILLE, NJ - The borough Recreation Department is sponsoring the II annual “Turkey Trot” 5K run Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 23.

The race is sanctioned by the USATF, with sanctioned 500 Grand Prix points.

Last year’s inaugural event drew 600 runners and raised over $10,000; organizers are hoping for 1,000 entries  this year. There were more than a few turkey costumes in the crowd, while other runners opted for turkey feather headbands and drumstick head gear.

Tyler Grimm, a 2012 graduate of Somerville High School, won last year’s race with a time of 14:29, far outdistancing the rest of the field; the course was a bit short of the normal 5K distance which accounted for the faster times logged by each runner.

The staging area is at Engine Co. No. 1 at 170 E. Main St. on the corner of Veterans Memorial Parkway East. The course will run through the eastern and southern parts of the borough, with the finish line back on Veterans Memorial Drive near the firehouse.

Registration is $35 and can be paid in advance or the day of the race. Fee is non-refundable. All monies raised will be dedicated to programs run by the Recreation Department.

Advance online registration is encouraged at www.runsignup.com/somerville5k

Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. The race begins at 9 a.m., with awards presented at 10 a.m.

Runners are asked to bring donations of non-perishable food items for the Somerset County Food Bank. A list of needed items is available online at www.somersetfoodbank.org/donate.

Awards categories include:  1st, 2nd and 3rd, Overall Male/Female Age Group; 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Male/Female 14 & Under; 15-19 years old; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60-69 and 70 years and older.

Volunteers are still needed to help run the event, according to Kathy Gerndt, director of Somerville Recreation. Those interested can contact Gerndt at kgerndt@somervillenj.org

Borough chiropractor Dr. Christopher Wawrzyniak of Functional Health, 32 Roosevelt Ave. is sponsor of the race along with the Recreation Department.
