FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, NJ – A 60-year-old township man has been charged with murdering his 82-year-old mother, according to Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson.
Dalton Chiscolm Jr., of Haverhill Place, Somerset, is charged with First Degree Murder in the death of his mother, Roberta Ann Taylor, 82, with whom the suspect lived, Robertson said.
Robertson provided the following account:
Franklin Township Police responded to a 911 emergency call reporting a disturbance at the Haverhill Place residence at 10:46 p.m. Nov. 7 Police say the suspect was throwing household items from a second-floor window and threatening police below.
Police called in for back-up, with detectives and emergency services attempting to de-escalate the situation, but Chiscolm refused to cooperate.
Police decided to force their way into the home, having been made aware that the suspect’s mother also lived there.
Once inside, they discovered the elderly woman’s body.
The suspect was taken into custody and taken to a hospital for medical evaluation. His mother was pronounced dead by medical personnel.
The New Jersey Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy on the woman Thursday morning and determined the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head, ruling the death a homicide.
An investigation continues to determine the motive, according to Robertson
The suspect remains under police guard at the hospital. The suspect will be transported to the Somerset County Jail once released from the hospital, pending a bail detention hearing.
