WARREN TWP., NJ – A 35-year-old township man was arrested Wednesday and now faces a string of drug charges and $300,000 cash bail.

Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Organized Crime and Narcotics Task Force received a tip that day that a man later identified as Kai Peter would be leaving his Mount Horeb Road home in a gray Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck and that he would be in possession of marijuana.

A Task Force surveillance team saw Peter leave his home and enter the truck around 8:25 p.m. Five minutes later, he was stopped in the King George Road area.

Detectives told Peter about the ongoing narcotics investigation. Somerset County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Apex and his handler responded and after sniffing the exterior of the truck, the K-9 gave a positive indication of narcotics inside the vehicle, according to a press release from Acting Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson.

Detectives obtained a Superior Court search warrant for the defendant’s vehicle and house. A search of the pickup truck resulted in the seizure of a yellow bag containing eight pounds of marijuana that was found on the rear seat of the vehicle, the release states.

A search of Peter’s house resulted in the seizure of 98 pounds of marijuana, four-and-a-half pounds of hashish, three pounds of hashish candy and $20,637 in cash, according to the press release. Detectives also allegedly found “an indoor grow for psilocybin mushrooms and germinating psilocybin mushroom seeds inside a refrigerator.”

According to the prosecutor, a packaging area for marijuana and hashish was found in the basement of the house and detectives seized a heat sealer, heat sealer bags, scales, artificial lighting, grow pots, hygrometer, a grinder, fans, gloves, mason jars, flexible ductwork, filters and a Mossberg .22 long rifle. The house was equipped with an air filtration system.

The street value of the marijuana seized is reported to be around $477,000, the hashish around $112,500 and the psilocybin mushrooms about $90,000.

Peter was charged with first degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance (marijuana) with intent to distribute; first degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance (hashish) with intent to distribute; a first-degree charge of maintaining a facility to produce a controlled dangerous substance; a first-degree charge of possession of a firearm while committing a controlled dangerous substance offense;  third-degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance (psilocybin mushroom); and possession of drug paraphernalia, which is a disorderly persons offense.

Bail was set by Hon. Kathy C. Qasim. The press release was issued jointly by Robertson, Acting Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of County Detectives Timothy M. Fitzgerald, Somerset County Sheriff Frank J. Provenzano and Warren Township Chief of Police William Keane.
