Hillsborough Students Learn How to Eat and Live Healthy

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ -Students at all nine township schools celebrated School Wellness Week recently, from discussions about physical and mental well being to yoga exercises, food tastings and cooking contests.

Discussion topics included stress management, drug and alcohol use, exercise, healthy eating and the importance of sleep. Each school provided its students with the opportunity to try something new during the week-long program.

Hillsborough students were encouraged and provided instruction on how to live healthy, from participating in a yoga assembly at Triangle Elementary School and the AWARE Fair held at Hillsborough Middle School that focused on wellness to Auten Road Intermediate School’s wellness tips for students and Sunnymead Elementary School’s “Eat 5 a Day Contest” encouraging students to eat five servings of fruit and vegetables each day.

During lunch periods, Sodexo Food Services provided Hillsborough students with the opportunity to sample new and exciting foods items each day such as corn black bean salsa and petite bananas.

As a way of helping younger students to recognize healthy eating habits, Sodexo held a cooking competition for elementary school students to showcase their culinary skills in the culmination of a month long “Future Chefs Competition.”

Hillsborough students in kindergarten through fourth grade were challenged to submit a favorite healthy Asian fusion recipe.

The winners of the competition were: 1st place -- Anaya Shah, 4th grade, Hillsborough Elementary School 2nd place -- Rymaa Kothavale, 3rd grade, Amsterdam Elementary School 3rd place -- Jaylen Patel, 2nd grade, Woods Road Elementary School.

As the first place winner, Shah will go on to compete in the regional competition with the hopes of winning a spot at the National Competition.
