FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, NJ – Two men from the Somerset section have been taken into custody and face multiple charges in two separate shootings late last month at two separate crime scenes where police estimate 57 rounds were fired into two separate residences.

One man was wounded with a bullet to his leg; he was treated and released from an area hospital.

Rome Cruz, 20, of Holly Street and Christopher Williams  23 of Victoria Drive were both taken into custody on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at two separate locations, according to Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson and Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of County Detectives John W. Fodor.

The shootings occurred on Monday, Dec. 30, 2019 on Barker Road and on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2019 on King Road, both in the Somerset section of the township.

Detectives from the Franklin Township Police Department and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit  worked both crime scenes, according to Robertson, who provided the following account:

Franklin police responded to a 4:30 a.m. 911 call on Dec. 30 that reported multiple shots fired in the area of Barker Road; there were no injuries; a total of 27 shots were fired into a residence on Barker Road.

The next day, Franklin police responded to a 911 call reporting multiple shots fired in the area of King Road at 2:36 a.m.. where 30 shots were fired into a residence, where a man inside suffered a leg wound.

The follow-up investigation, which included several interviews and leads identified Cruz and Williams as two individuals involved in the shootings. 

Cruz has been charged with two counts of 1st degree Attempted Murder and one count of 2nd degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose and is lodged at the Somerset County Jail pending a bail detention hearing.

Williams has been charged with two counts of 1st degree Attempted Murder and one count of 2nd degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose. Williams was also charged with 3rd degree Resisting Arrest. Williams is lodged at the Somerset County Jail pending a bail detention hearing.

The charges are merely an accusation and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
