SOMERVILLE, NJ - Heavy construction equipment has moved on to the site of a planned five-story luxury apartment building on Main Street that will include a parking deck for over 500 cars, a restaurant and retail stores on the ground floor, a health and fitness club, and a swimming pool on the top floor.

Edge II will include 153 apartments, and will complete the three-phase Somerville Towne Center development built by Edgemere Properties, whose principal owner is Jack Morris, co-owner of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on Atlantic City's boardwalk and owner and developer of residential and commercial properties in several states. Morris also owns the Brookside Apartments in Somerville.

Phase One is the 70,000 square-foot ShopRite supermarket to the rear of Edge I, which was the second component of the $100 million redevelopment project in the center of the borough's downtown retail and restaurant district. The ground floor of Edge I includes Wolfgang's Steakhouse, Starbucks and other retail stores.

An existing parking lot on the property adjacent to the Chase Bank on Davenport Street will be ripped up to allow removal of old underground utility lines and the installation of new sewer, water and electrical infrastructure to service the new buildings, according to Colin Driver, the borough's Economic Development director.

Once that work is completed, a new outdoor parking lot with 562 spaces will be built adjacent to the Chase Bank.

Preparation work has begun on the property fronting Main Street where a temporary paved parking lot will be provided to replace the lot that will be torn up, according to Driver.

The parking lot will be for use of residents who live in the Edge I apartments.

The Edge II and parking deck will be built on the property bordered by West Main Street, Veterans Memorial Drive, Davenport Street and Doughty Avenue and across from Edge I. Public parking will be available in the deck, with a portion of the 521 spaces in the structure designated for tenants.

Morris also purchased two vacant storefronts across from Edge II, adjacent to Mannion's Pub & Restaurant. Plans are to demolish the two structures and replace them with a five-story building with retail space on the ground floor and 45 apartments on the upper four stories. Parking for tenants will be provided in the Edge II deck.

Last week the Borough Council introduced a $7.25 million bond ordinance to finance construction of the parking deck. A final vote is expected in July, according to Mayor Dennis Sullivan
