Area Congregations Join with Somerville Church to Celebrate Martin Luther King

SOMERVILLE, NJ - United Reformed Church. 100 West Main St., will host the 23rd annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, on Sunday, Jan. 14th.

The annual event is a joint effort of Clergy United for Christian Ministry and the Somerville Area Ministers’ Association. This celebration offers an afternoon in which community members can join together to share a meal and to become, if for only a few hours, that “beloved community” of which Dr. King wrote and often spoke.

The federal holiday honoring the civil rights leader, who was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn., in April, 1968,  is Monday, Jan. 16th.

The afternoon will begin at 2 p.m. with a community meal served in Fellowship Hall. The luncheon will conclude around 3:30 p.m. and a service will take place in the Sanctuary beginning at 4 p.m.

United Reformed Church Pastor Paul Janssen will serve as the host of worship, which will include clergy speakers from First Baptist Church, Shiloh Pentecostal Church, Faith in Action Church, St. John’s Episcopal Church, First United Methodist Church and St. Martin’s Episcopal Church.

The gathering this year will also include a moment of remembrance for Pastor James Dockery, former pastor of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Bridgewater, who passed away in December, 2017. The Speaker of the Day will be Rev. Jimmie Miller, recently installed as the new pastor of St. Thomas AME Zion Church in Somerville. The choir from St. Thomas will offer musical renditions. In addition, there will be several youth presenters from various area congregations.

New this year, is the establishment of a Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship, to which the offerings will be dedicated. This Scholarship fund will be administered by Clergy United for Christian Ministry.

All are welcome to attend this special celebration. For more information, call United Reformed Church at (908) 725-4545.
