MANVILLE, NJ - Since March 13th, The Arc of Somerset County has been determined to find ways to enhance the care of those they serve to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
The agency’s primary goal is to work to protect those adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are living under the care of the Arc of Somerset County group homes, and assisted living apartments who have been forced to shelter in place at home.
For many adults, this indefinite change in routine is complex and not fully understood with joy. Time way from their Arc of Somerset County day programs and recreation time seeing friends and family is much harder to accept and adjust to. For over 60 Direct Support Professionals, this means a 24/7 care and operations at the homes and apartments with personal care, prevention, meals and in-home recreation.
As the Easter week approached, The Arc of Somerset County posted a public plea request for a “Bunny Brigade” of home cooked Easter meals, flowers and desserts to their Facebook page so the adults who reside at 14 group homes and 20 supervised apartments as well as the Arc DSP staff who have continued to be dedicated to the mission of their work since the start of the COVID-19 crisis could enjoy their religious holiday celebrations.
By Wednesday, April 8th, the response was overwhelming and a busy drop off schedule was set and filled for Friday at the Manville office. All meals were delivered on Saturday afternoon set with re-heating instructions and special notes from some volunteers of the community.
"The quick response by our local community was not only heartwarming, but also very much appreciated by our adults, their families and our staff. It brought many smiles and tears to the residents as well as our staff," said Lauren Frary, executive director of The Arc of Somerset County."
The Arc of Somerset County extends special thanks to its local partners who donated for this Easter/Passover Holiday celebration weekend, including Wegman’s of Bridgewater; GiGi' s Play House of Hillsborough; the Good Donut Shop of Somerville; the Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey for their donation of Girl Scout cookies and the Bernard's Ensemble for donating Easter flowers.
