WALDORF, Md. -- The Somerset Patriots (6-16, 48-44) had a late rally fall short Saturday night in a 5-2 loss to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (12-9, 37-53) at Regency Furniture Stadium
The Patriots have now lost seven straight games.
Southern Maryland struck first on a Josh McAdams RBI single in the bottom of the third inning. The Blue Crabs added three more runs in the fifth inning on a two-run single from Tony Thomas and an RBI fielder’s choice from Rubi Silva.
Crabs’ starting pitcher Daryl Thompson (W, 11-6) retired the first 16 batters that he faced, carrying a perfect game into the top of the sixth inning. With one out and nobody on base, Gabriel Bracamonte (2) hit a line drive solo home run over the left field fence.
Somerset made it a 4-2 score one inning later. Justin Pacchioli led off the seventh with a base hit and later scored from third base on a wild pitch.
The Patriots loaded the bases in the eighth inning but ultimately came up empty. The Blue Crabs got an insurance run back in the home eighth on a Charlie Varlerio RBI single to extend their lead to 5-2 and top off the scoring.
Mat Latos (S, 13) got the final five outs of the ballgame to earn the save.
David Holmberg (L, 1-3) allowed one run over three innings to suffer the loss.
