HOBOKEN, NJ - A Jersey City man crashed a bicycle into a Hoboken Police Officer as he attempted to flee Pier A Satruday.
According to reports at about 7:30 a.m. a man walked into headquarters reporting that he located a male he believed to have stolen his property the day before. The victim provided a description of the alleged perpetrator and told officers that he was riding a bicycle in the area of Pier A Park, along Hoboken's Hudson River Waterfront.
Officer Brandon Fitzgibbons, Officer Marvin Dejesus, and Officer Joseph Spano responded to the scene and the male matching the victim’s description was located. The suspect was ordered to stop, but instead turned his bicycle around and started to ride away. Officer Fitzgibbons approached the suspect on foot and stood in the path of the cyclist while giving audible and visual commands to stop. The suspect then picked up his pace and crashed headlong into Officer Fitzgibbons, causing both the officer and the suspect to fall to the ground.
The suspect then fled on foot was chased by Officer Spano and Officer Dejesus, who caught up with Angel Sanchez, 41, and placed him under arrest.
Sanchez was searched and found to be in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was charged on a warrant with Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose, Obstruction, Possession of CDS Marijuana, and Drug Paraphernalia. He was then transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
The reported theft still remains under investigation. The defendant remains innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
