HOBOKEN, NJ - The Mile Square City is expanding commercial and recreational space within the square mile, announcing more "Slow Streets" and "Summer Streets" initiatives for this weekend.

“Slow Streets,”—designed to open more public space for residents to safely jog, walk and bike—will take place Saturday and Sunday along Park Avenue and 10th Street. “Summer Streets”—offering outdoor street space for retail and hospitality businesses—will now occur on Washington Street and 1st Street at various times on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“Hoboken is 100% committed to providing as much public space as possible to promote safe outdoor activities and dining,” said Mayor Ravi Bhalla. “As one of the most densely populated cities in the country, social distancing can become a challenge. That’s why we are taking proactive steps to create more room on our roadways to enjoy recreational activities and patronize our local businesses. Thank you to the Hoboken Business Alliance, City Hall staff, and the Council for the partnership on these important quality of life initiatives.”

“Regarding Summer Streets, we have to be able to have enough space to allow businesses, restaurants and retailers to welcome their consumers,” said Stuart Koperweis, Executive Director of the Hoboken Business Alliance. “We’re now allowing them to expand their footprint into the street and allowing the pedestrians to walk throughout the streets to give them a more inviting physically distant but yet socially interactive atmosphere.”

Slow Streets will take place on Park Avenue from 5th Street to 14th Street; 10th Street between Hudson Street and Grand Street; and Grand Street between 10th and 11th Street. Times are Saturday and Sunday from 8 am until 8 pm.

Summer Streets, which successfully launched on Thursday night, will continue this weekend on 1st Street between Washington Street and Garden Street on Friday, July 24 from 5 pm until 12 am, and on Saturday, July 25 from 10 am until 9 pm. Summer Streets will run along Washington Street between 1st Street and 5th Street on Sunday, July 26 from 11 am until 8 pm.
