HOBOKEN, NJ - The New York Sports Club gym in downtown Hoboken has closed suddenly, as of September 30. Members were sent an email just before 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday night, informing them that the gym would no longer be operating at the 59 Newark Street location.
"I belonged to the downtown New York Sports Club in Hoboken for 22 years, and I am so sorry to see it close," said devoted NYSC member Nancy Colasurdo. "They had just opened again the week of Labor Day and I had been going back slowly."
Gyms statewide were closed since mid-March due to concerns over COVID-19. Governor Murphy allowed for the reopening of facilities at a limited capacity as of September 1st. Meanwhile, a degree of friction built up between gyms and their members for charging membership fees throughout the lockdown.
According to the NYSC website, the downtown Hoboken gym is no longer in existence, and has even been wiped off the map. Meanwhile, the Hoboken North location at 210 14th Street appears to be operating. The gym will reportedly honor membership at other facilities.
Colasurdo said, "This is a real blow. I am exploring my options now," adding, "Do I really want to join a new gym in a pandemic?"
Meanwhile, a new facility from a different fitness franchise appears to be moving into an adjacent location in that part of Hoboken.
