HOBOKEN - The local food scene took a strong punch to the gut today, as the award-winning restaurant, Cucharamama, abruptly announced its closure.

A short, yet devastating instagram post popped up around 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, stating:

We are heartbroken to announce the closing of Cucharamama.
We had hoped to be able to reopen but due to recent developments that option is no longer visible.

Thank you for letting us serve you for the last 16 years.
We will miss you."

Spanish for “mother spoon,” Cucharamama (233 Clinton Street) specialized in artisanal South American cooking from Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Brazil.

Featuring a free-standing wood-burning oven, Cucharamama offered an amazing array of flavors and dishes—from flatbreads to ribeyes—all cooked to exacting perfection by one of the best chefs in the country.

Cucharamama‘s Maricel Presilla has been a winner of the James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef, and is also the first Latin American woman to ever cook as guest chef at the White House.

Cucharamama featured an equally impressive menu of authentic South American cocktails—Brazil’s Caipirinha, Peru’s Pisco Sour and so many more.

No specific reason was given for the restaurant's closure, while establishments nationwide are facing a tough path amid COVID-19 restrictions.

Crestfallen patrons of Hoboken's dining scene will certainly miss their mother spoon.
