Girls Growing Greens: Giving Back to Others

HOLMDEL, N.J. - Holmdel High School Girls Grow Greens to Give Back
Healthy, organic vegetables was on the minds of four Holmdel High School  students who decided that farming their own vegetables would be the best way to guarantee pesticide free produce. And most importantly, they wanted to share their crop with those in need. Thus the idea of "Girls Giving Greens" was born.
In early Spring 2016, the members of Girls Giving Greens (Gabrielle Cipriano, Julia Hamwi, Wallis Toscarelli, and Alexandra Vervoordt) created their garden from scratch: tearing up lawn, tilling the ground, and planting seeds. After watering and weeding the field for months, finally in late July, their crops were ready to be picked. The first box containing varieties of lettuce, cucumbers and  tomatoes was able to be donated to the nonprofit organization of Mary's Place by the Sea in Ocean Grove. Mary's Place is a retreat for women who struggle with cancer. Here they are able to enjoy a relaxing stay with provided meals and activities.
This Summer, "Girls Giving Greens" is excited to provide Mary’s Place and other non-profit organizations with sustainable, pesticide free vegetables that are home grown.
Anyone interested in donating their produce to Girls Growing Greens for  distribution should email:
