TAPinto Spotlight on an amazing Holmdel 7th graders! The article below is being featured as part of the  Talk About the Good  campaign.

HOLMDEL, NJ: Ishani Singh & Nicole Kaneare are both 7th graders residing in Holmdel, New Jersey. They reached out to TAPinto Holmdel: "We were heartbroken to read an article regarding the recent food drive in Egg Harbor where 3,000 people showed up to receive food when there were only 1,500 meal kits. We couldn’t believe that half of them had to leave without food. We decided to make a difference. You can too! Singh and Kaneare continue, "Thirty-six million. That is the number of people who filed for unemployment since March in the United States according to the U.S. Department of Labor. That means that over ten percent of people in this country don’t have a job.

This is greatly impacting New Jersey too, where over one million have filed unemployment claims between March 15th and May 2nd . The coronavirus outbreak has been the main factor for the immense number of lost jobs. This is because some businesses were forced to close, or completely shut down. Lost jobs often mean extreme hardships for families.

According to a recent Monmouth University Poll2, 42% of households have an adult who was laid off from work because of the outbreak.

Additionally, The Hamilton Project found that “In almost one in five households of mothers with children age 12 and under, the children were experiencing food insecurity.” Those children don’t deserve to go through such hardships at such a young age. Imagine being a young child and not knowing when you would have your next meal.

We want to make a difference in people’s lives by spreading awareness about this issue. We are hoping to assist all families who need food to the best of our ability. We started our own fundraiser3 on the Community FoodBank website.

We sent out messages to our friends and family, who have been extremely supportive. With their contributions, we have raised $2,041. We hope to reach and surpass our goal of $2,500. We are appealing to all residents of New Jersey to support this cause. Please donate to help those in need. We are always stronger together!" Donate today to fundraiser organized by two Holmdel seventh graders for Community Foodbank of NJ
