Holmdel Boys Varsity Basketball Comes Up Short Against Spotswood In First Round

SPOTSWOOD, NJ - The Holmdel High School boys varsity basketball team came up short against Spotswood High School, 72-57. Spotswood will move on in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group Two Tournament on Tuesday. Spotswood is the eighth seed in the tournament, knocking out the ninth seeded Hornets to move on to the quarterfinals.

Timmy Zhou was the top scorer in the game, netting 23 points for Holmdel. Abdullah Nieskens scored 16 points for the Chargers who took a 35-29 lead into the halftime break. Justin Dekovics put 13 points on the scoreboard for Spotswood while Vinnie Guardiola added a dozen. Derek Buhl put up 11 and Matt Vento chipped in eight.

Spotswood will now face top seeded Rumson-Fair Haven High School in the quarterfinals of the tournament on Thursday. Rumson-Fair Haven took down 16th seeded North Plainfield High School, 71-47 yesterday. Rumson put up a 22-2 regular season record this winter. The Bulldogs won the Shore A Central Conference title this season, going undefeated in 12 division games. Rumson's only loses thus far have come against St. Peter's Prep and Mater Dei. Thursday's quarterfinal game will be the first meeting for these two teams.

Spotswood's first round win improves the team's overall season record to 16-11. The Chargers were 7-5 in conference play and finished third in the Greater Middlesex Conference Blue Division behind Carteret and Bishop Ahr High Schools.

Spotswood will travel to Rumson for Thursday's game. Tip off is at 7 p.m.
