HOLMDEL, N.J. - Inspired excellence was on hand during the awards ceremony in Holmdel schools. Many awards were given out, including Holmdel FC Soccer Club. According to a news release, on June 12, 2018, the Holmdel FC Soccer Club presented 4 scholarships to former HFC players who have excelled both on and off the field.
Abbey and Kailey Flynn
Abbey and Kailey Flynn played 8 years of soccer in our club on a championship team. One of them anchored the defense while the other was a constant threat on offense. They went on to play 2 years of varsity soccer for Holmdel High School. They are members of the National Honor Society and achieved Honor Roll with distinction every year of high school. They volunteer extensively in the community especially with our soccer club. They were certified referees. They volunteered for us at countless camps, clinics and tryouts.
Next year, Abbey will be attending the University of Texas at Austin and Kailey will be attending the University of California, Davis.
Gabrielle Cipriano played 8 years of soccer in our club on a championship team. She volunteered extensively for both our club and for HYAA including serving as a referee. She went on to a successful high school career – receiving her varsity letter all 4 years and serving as team captain her junior and senior years. She was a key contributor of the Holmdel HS 2014 New Jersey State Championship team. She is a member of the National Honor society and achieved Honor Roll with distinction every year of high school. Her excellence and dedication not only on the field but in the classroom has led her to becoming a member of the Haverford College Women’s soccer team.
Matt Lionette is the recipient of the Russell Drone scholarship. Matt played his entire youth career for Holmdel FC. He has been a key component to the Holmdel HS boys soccer teams success over the past 4 years which was crowned off with a New Jersey State Championship. He was named first team all-state, all shore and all division. He was not only a captain of the soccer team but also a captain on the Holmdel HS varsity lacrosse team. He continuously gave back to our soccer club and HYAA soccer over the years serving as a referee and tryout volunteer.
The organization released a statement, "We would like to thank all our scholarship recipients for their dedication to the game and all that they have done to help to make Holmdel FC/NJX a great place for youth players to enjoy the game that they love."
Pound for Pound
Tuesday evening brought other awards as well. Lucille Venancio, her son Kevin Venancio, Dr. Kevin Sirchio and were on hand to give two "Pound for Pound" Scholarship awards in honor of Shawn Venancio. The Varsity Sr. Football player was given to Johnny O'Beirne and the Sr. Varsity Baseball award went to Michael Devino, both young men who showed sportsmanship, leadership & talent.
Dr. Kevin Sirchio is from the class of 1987 gave a heartwarming and funny speech about Shawn. Kevin played football & baseball with Shawn & were great friends. "Thanks to all who supported us at the Memorial Golf Outing and made this award possible again.This award shines a bright light on a star as Shawn will always be. My deepest love to family and friends who have never forgotten Shawn. Love to all and HHS will always have a place and piece of my heart" said Shawn's mother, Lucille Venancio.
