HOLMDEL, NJ - Continuing a long tradition of preserving open space and farmland, the Holmdel Township Committee will meet Tuesday night and pass a resolution formalizing an historic preservation initiative. In partnership with Monmouth County, the plan is to preserve 62 Acres.
According to information released by the Township, Holmdel has partnered with the Monmouth County Agricultural Development Board to preserve 62 acres of farmland between State Route 34 and the Willow Brook. The parcel sits just north of Newman Springs Rd.
Specifically, the resolution title includes the following language:
RESOLUTION APPROVING AND ENDORSING AN ACQUISITION BY THE MONMOUTH COUNTY AGRICULTURE DEVELOPMENT BOARD OF A DEVELOPMENT EASEMENT IN BLOCK 15, LOT 2 IN THE TOWNSHIP OF HOLMDEL (AND ADJACENT PROPERTY IN THE TOWNSHIP OF MARLBORO) AND ACCOMPANYING COST-SHARING AGREEMENT
One of the 62 acres being acquired from H.M.F. Associates is located in Marlboro, and that municipality has also agreed to the terms of the purchase.
“In an effort to maintain the Township’s rural character and to limit overdevelopment in our community, we have identified and successfully acquired a significant piece of land that will remain as preserved open space for current residents and future generations to enjoy,” said Mayor Eric Hinds.
This land acquisition follows the Township’s successful 2018 initiative to preserve Callan Farm, a 12-acre parcel on Everett Road, which was also targeted by the County.
The Township’s estimated cost for the acquisition of these 62 acres is $394,816. The 2019 budget will include $400,000 to cover the purchase. This total is just 16 percent of the entire cost of acquisition.
Monmouth County will contribute $592,224, or 24 percent of the purchase price, while the remaining $1.48 million will be state funded.
