Holmdel Wrestlers Have Successful Season as Scott Dupont Looks to Make History in Atlantic City

HOLMDEL, N.J - The Holmdel Wrestling Team is having a banner year and on their way to Atlantic City.

They are considered the #6 top team in the state for 2018. On February 24, Holmdel Wrestling went to Hunterdon Central High School for the NJSIAA Region V Wrestling Tournament. They did very well and we wanted you to hear a little bit from the coach, 2018 District 20 Coach of the Year, Dan Franke.

Franke spoke to the support a wrestler feels when he is not alone.

"For the wrestler competing to have your teammates with you and that is such a better atmosphere knowing it is not just you". Franke said.

He also talked about how hard the team worked saying "I think we just started to buy in to the success we were having. Once our guys started believing that a state sectional final was possible, they started doing the little things like making another weight class and doing the extra things because they were doing it for a bigger purpose than just themselves."

This brought the coach to talk about the question of what kind of drive and commitment it takes.

"It just takes you to 'why' you are doing this and what your goals are,” Franke said. “They started to set goals and then made the sacrifices to get there whether it was making a lower weight class or doing an extra sprint. Each wrestler just has to believe that the juice is worth the squeeze and that's where being individually motivated starts to kick in."

For the NJSIAA state tournament this weekend in AC, Holmdel had one wrestler qualify in senior Scott Dupont at 152 pound weight class.

Dupont placed second at the Region 5 tournament last weekend, earning his second trip in the state tournament in Atlantic City.

He's the program's all-time wins leader and has was recently crowned District 20 champion at 152 for second straight season.

Dupont is trying to become the first Holmdel wrestler since 1983 to place at states.

If Dupont succeeds, he will join John Mullan and Marc Buczynski as only wrestlers in Holmdel High School history to place in the state tournament.
