LAKE COMO, NJ - The Mama Mare Foundation is hosting their eighth annual De-Feet Breast Cancer 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, April 21. The run/walk will begin and end at Bar Anticipation in Lake Como with all the proceeds going to benefit the Mama Mare Foundation's mission to assist breast cancer patients and their families.

“We offer a Hair to Heal program, which covers the costs of wigs for patient's whose insurance denies them,” Mama Mare founder Krista Kasper explained. “We also just launched a program where we partnered with Eat Clean Bro to offer nutritious meals to families who are currently battling breast cancer. Another new program sets up house cleaning for people who are in active treatment. We also have a financial aid program that helps to eliminate medical debt as well as a travel program that sends patients and their families on dream vacations. At Robert Wood Johnson University hospital, we offer a complimentary massage program for in patients, out patients and their families.”

Kasper founded the Mama Mare Foundation in 2010 in memory of her mother Mary Ellen Pernice. Pernice lost her hard-fought battle with the disease in 2009. The April 21 walk will honor Pernice's memory along with Cindy Abrams and Jill Lecorchick.

Participants will take a scenic run or walk along the 5K course that stretches through Lake Como, Belmar and Spring Lake, offering up a picturesque backdrop.

Spotswood resident and breast cancer survivor Jill Thaisz will be doing the April walk along with her team of family and friends.

"I continue to support this amazing foundation that helped me through my breast cancer treatment," Thaisz said of the upcoming Mama Mare run/walk. "Wigs, oncology massages, a family vacation and constant emotional support are some of the incredible acts they do for breast cancer patients."

Thaisz and her family were the recipients of the Mama Mare Foundation's My Happy Place Trip in 2015 after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014. Fellow borough resident Alison Shornock and her family received a surprise all-expense paid trip to Disney World in December courtesy of the foundation following a challenging and difficult year of surgical and chemotherapy treatments at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

Both women experienced the support and compassion of the Mama Mare Foundation first hand as they battled breast cancer, which is how Kasper continues to honor her mother's memory. Pernice was well-known for her kind heart and dedicated her life to helping others.

Participants can register for the Mama Mare Foundation's De-Feet Breast Cancer 5K Run/Walk online. Race Registration is $30 and includes the registration fee, 5K t-shirt, race packet and post race celebration. The online registration ends on April 4. Race day registrations are welcome. Registration on race day is $35 and includes entry fee and post race celebration. Tees and race packets will only be available while supplies last for race day entrants.

Check-in on race day begins at 7:30 a.m. with the race kicking off at 9 a.m. Pets do have to sit out this timed-race, but jogging strollers are welcome. A free fun run for kids will take place afterwards at 10:30 a.m.

All runners and walkers are invited to stay for the post-race celebration that starts immediately following completion of the run/walk, which includes a barbeque, DJ, award ceremony and a special survivor/memorial dedication. Family and friends not running or walking in the race can purchase BBQ tickets on the day of the race.

The Mama Mare Foundation De-Feet Breast Cancer 5K Walk/Run is a rain or shine event.
