LINCROFT, NJ: On the evening of Monday, February 24, just in time for Fat Tuesday, the gymnasium at Saint Leo the Great School was sugar packed! There were rows and rows of delicious concoctions. Dozens upon dozens of delicious home baked cupcakes masquerading as everything from stiletto heals and baby Yoda, to farm animals and cheeseburgers. There were cupcakes that looked good enough to drink-as in a creamy cappuccino...Some were swimming under the sea, others crawling on land. Whatever they were magically transformed to be, they were delicious! They were also guilt free because they were all for a great cause: to raise money for Saint Leo the Great School. It was the annual Cupcake Wars Fundraiser, and 2020 was a sugar rush success!
The event borrowed from The Food Network's Cup Cake Wars is fun for all ages. The way it works is that Saint Leo's students, with their families design their own special cupcake creation to display. The cupcakes on display are then judged for creativity and taste. After the judges have time to decide who the winners are, all of the cupcakes are then available to purchase.
The gym was packed the entire event as everyone admired the creativity and began giving into temptation, with many families enjoying their purchased cupcakes on the spot and many families carrying around armfuls of cupcake boxes. It's a guilt free purchase, as all of the event's proceeds go right back to the students of Saint Leo's.
CoChairs for the event, Maria Importico and Andrea Tanelli put countless hours of time into making sure that everything ran smoothly. The cupcake boxes were appropriately donated by Sugar Rush of Red Bank, NJ. Maria Importico commented, "The Saint Leo the Great community is wonderful. Look at the amazing support tonight from all the families. I think it's such a special event because it's one where the children are working right along with their parents and other family members to create their own special cupcake designs, so it becomes a great family project. There were so many wonderful parents who pitched in and helped. It's another great example of the real community we have at St. Leo's."
There were four divisions, K-1st, 2nd-3rd, 4th-5th and 6th-8th. Each division had two prizes, one for best tasting and one for best decorated.
