Monmouth County, NJ: The Social Community Activities Network, popularly known as SCAN, is an organization that provides an active support system for those over the age of 50 in Monmouth and Ocean Counties. SCAN uses education and technology to create an environment where seniors can continue to grow intellectually, socially, physically and emotionally. SCAN offers various educational programs, seminars, exercise classes and social opportunities. SCAN is a non profit resource center founded in 1988, now celebrating 30 years of inspiring, informing and empowering adults over the age of 50.
SCAN Board President Jim Winn says, "Having served on the SCAN Board for the past three years, I can tell you that SCAN is an amazing organization. They provide today's active adults with valuable resources and I can't say enough great things about SCAN's executive director Pat Bohse and her team. The SCAN organization is an incredible asset to the communities it serves."
On the morning of June 20th, in recognition of national Alzheimer's and brain awareness month, SCAN hosted a free Brain Fair at the Bayshore Senior Center in Keansburg. The event was a successful one with regard to attendees, vendors and presentations. Refreshments were provided and the room was lively with interesting and engaging speakers. The overall theme for the Brain Fair was "Engage Your Brain" and that mission was accomplished well with interactive stations featuring puzzles, word games, trivia and so much more.
Keynote speaker Rosemary Gorman, APN of Geriatric Institute of Monmouth Medical Center spoke about the effects of aging on memory and what is normal and what is not. Gorman discussed strategies to preserve your brain function and enhance your memory.
Personal trainers from GymGuyz were there demonstrating exercises for healthier breathing and improved posture. SCAN is headquartered in the downstairs lower level of the Monmouth Mall in Eatontown. Events are held in the mall as well as in Ocean County at St. Andrew United Methodist Church, and at the Freehold SCAN Campus at the YMCA. According to their website, SCAN's programming falls within four divisions;
1. The HUB which includes the Monmouth Mall location and public education,
2. SCAN on Wheels which brings high impact programming directly into high needs communities,
3. The multi-media division which includes three cable TV shows and social media, and the newest division;
4. Focus on the specific needs of Caregivers.
