The men’s team took first place and the women's team finished in second place, while Head Coach Jack Caucino of Point Pleasant was honored as Coach of the Meet. The national championship team practices at the Red Bank YMCA and at Camp Zehnder in Wall Township.

“The Community YMCA is proud to make history by winning our first national swim championship,” said President & CEO Laurie Goganzer. “We commend the swimmers and their dedicated coaches, led by Jack Caucino, for all their hard work and commitment.”

The women's 200-meter medley consisting of Marie Schobel of Sea Girt, Emma Shaughnessy of Colts Neck, Ginger Hansen of Holmdel, and Megan Judge of Marlboro, captured first place and set a new national record with a time of 1:57.19.

Two swimmers captured individual national championships. Marie Schobel, 18, a 2018 graduate of Manasquan High School, won the 50-meter backstroke, tying the national record with a time of 29.09. She will be attending Pennsylvania State University this fall. Richie Trentalange, 16, of Middletown, swam to a first-place victory in the 50-meter breaststroke. He will be a junior this fall at the Marine Academy of Science and Technology at Sandy Hook.

The national championship is especially gratifying to Caucino, the first in his career. “I am thrilled for the team’s remarkable achievements in Maryland and throughout the past year,” said Caucino, noting that the team swam to a fourth-place finish at the YMCA short course nationals in April and captured second place at the YMCA State Championship meet in March.

Caucino has twice been recognized as Coach of the Meet at the YMCA nationals. He has coached the Aquarockets swim team for 21 years, leading 11 teams to top 10 finishes at YMCA national meets.
