HOLMDEL, N.J. - It's a busy year ahead with a 40 plus million dollar referendum in addition to an annual budget of over 57 million in process as the Holmdel Board of Education took up the gavel and reorganized Wednesday at the William R. Satz School on Crawfords Corner Road.

Business Administrator Mike Petrizzo called the meeting to order at 8PM. The first order of business was swearing in two newly elected Board of Education Members and two re-elected board members. Holmdel High School graduate Jamie Collins was elected to  a three-year term as well as Eileen Briamonte and Peter Reddy. Holmdel High School Graduate Terence Wall was elected to a one year unexpired term.

Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Joseph Oxley, gave the oath of office to Terence Wall. Surrounded by his family, Wall was sworn in to his first term. He previously served for nine years as a Holmdel Township Committeeman.

Wall said, “I want to thank my family for their support and the voters who provided me the opportunity to serve. It's an honor to be sworn in by Judge Oxley, who serves the State of New Jersey with professionalism and distinction as a Monmouth County Superior Court Judge. I plan on working hard with my board of education peers to deliver positive results for the children and their parents and guardians that we are elected to serve.”

Jamie Collins, Peter Reddy and Eileen Briamonte were sworn in by Paul Green, Board Attorney.

HBOE member Mike Sockol made the nomination to elect Victoria Flynn as the 2018 President. The Board then elected Victoria Flynn to serve as the President of the Holmdel Board of Education. Said Flynn, "First, I want to thank my fellow board members for your support. I always enjoy working with you and I look forward to continuing to work with you in the collaborative manner as we always have. I look forward to continuing to work with Dr McGarry and Mr Petrizzo and I want to also take this opportunity as President to welcome our newest Board Members, Mrs. Collins and Mr. Wall...I know this board will work with you in making sure the transition is as seamless as possible. This is a hard working and dedicated group. And without our hardworking and dedicated friend Denise Kline here, we are also reminded to be a caring group."  See full video here of the HBOE's 2018 President, Victoria Flynn's acceptance speech (followed by the nomination for HBOE Vice-President):

The next order of business was the election of a Vice-President. The choice was unanimous for board member Chiung-Yin Cheng Liu

The other action item on the agenda regarded 2018 Committee appointments. The committees for 2017 included Budget and Finance, Buildings and Grounds, Special Services (the committee charged with addressing issues and opportunities related to special education pre-K through 12 in the Holmdel School District), Curriculum and Instruction,Labor and Personnel as well as Community Relations. The decision was 8 in favor with one abstention to delete the Special Services Committee for 2018. Discussion was had on the origins of the idea and the responsible parties in the process toward a recommendation. The decision was made to include the topics related to Special Services within Curriculum and Instruction. The committee assignments are expected within a week.

General discussion from the board included Board Member Wall seeking updates on the status on Full-Time Kindergarten. It is slated to start Fall of 2019 according to Superintendent McGarry, who also confirmed, when queried, that there is enough existing physical space for it. He is doing an internal analysis to be reported in June. Board Member Joe Hammer followed up on 2017 suggestions from the public about later start times for Holmdel High School. They further discussed the Academic Calendar. The next meeting is January 31st.

The audio of the meeting will be available soon at http://holmdelschools.org
