AT THE JERSEY SHORE....  Join the Beach Haus team during a can and taproom release of Interstellar Blues tomorrow, August 23 from noon to 10 p.m. at the landmark brewery, 801 Main Street, Belmar.

BELMAR, NJ — Beach Haus Brewery will unveil this week a new beer made with blueberries picked fresh at a South Jersey farm earlier this summer.

For Interstellar Blues — a brew that boasts the flavor of blueberries and cream — it all began with a July 8 trip by Beach Haus production manager Dylan Kohan and Rick Weyersberg to the Consalo Family Farms in Egg Harbor City.

“It was the peak of the blueberry season in New Jersey, and we thought the fruit would make for a great new beer,” said Kohan, who contacted Consalo Farms, one of the largest blueberry producers in the state with 1,200 acres that harvested more than 8 million pounds of the fruit last year.

After spending a day at the farm observing first-hand the processing operation, they brought back some 1,200 pounds of blueberries — all sorted and packed in large plastic-lined boxes.

Once back in Belmar at the state-of-the-art, 30-barrel brew house, the beer-making process began under the direction of lead brewer Matthew Pipkin.

It first took another three days to get the best batch of blueberries for brewing. “We had to manually go through all the berries to remove the remaining unripe green berries, sticks and leaves,” Pipkin said. “We ended up with about 640 pounds of useable berries. I’m really excited to be able to get such a large quantity of blueberries to use for our beer. It truly was a large labor of love to get it done.”

After a two-month brewing process at the state-of-art brewery, Pipkin said the beer has come together nicely, and he is pleased with the way it’s finished up. Interstellar Blues is a milkshake IPA (India pale ale) that “tastes a bit like blueberry pie with hint of whipped cream,” he said.

It joins the other milkshake IPAs exclusively made at Beach Haus Brewery: “We Were Made For Peach Other,” which placed second in its category at this year’s Atlantic City Beer and Music Fest and Belmartian, which boasts the sweetness of strawberries, bananas and vanilla.

“We have done really well with the milkshake IPAs, and the brewers keep coming up with great ideas,” said Steve Tichenor, taproom and events manager at Beach Haus. “I’m really looking forward to this release. It will move like the others.”
