JERSEY SHORE: Save Coastal Wildlife (SCW), is a nonprofit dedicated to educating people about the protection and conservation of marine wildlife that live, migrate, spawn, and feed in the coastal waters, with a particular focus on the Jersey Shore from the Raritan Bay down to Delaware Bay.

SCW is asking for mature and responsible volunteers to count and monitor seal populations around Sandy Hook Bay, NJ for the 2020-2021 winter.  The program will aid in protecting winter haul-out seal colonies and assessing the health of the marine ecosystem.

  • A trained volunteer will conduct land-based seal surveys, identify seals species, photograph seals and conduct photo-ID when and if possible.
  • Be able to walk or move around on a cold and often windy winter beach on sandy and muddy terrain to observe, collect and report data on seal numbers, behaviors, and disturbances.
  • Use binoculars and/or a spotting scope to observe seals. Volunteers must be able to provide their own binoculars or spotting scope.

To participate, you must register and attend an online training workshop.
