HEALTH & WELLNESS COLUMN:

We have all heard the term “know thyself”, which is always a great aspiration. But what if we applied that term not just to an understanding of who we are on a psychic level, but to understand the power we possess when we choose to explore our core? The best way to explore your core is use the Pilates Training Method as your compass at Club Pilates Middletown, conveniently located in the Middletown Shop Rite plaza. Click here to sign up for a free intro class today.

The Pilates Method is a series of core centric movements created in the 1920’s by Joseph Pilates. He originally called it “Contrology” and defined his work as a way to completely and thoroughly unify the body, mind, and spirit. If you choose to embark on a Pilates journey, you can expect to tone and strengthen your body while maintaining muscular balance, improve posture and flexibility, and of course a flatter stomach! Before you decide to go exploring, you should ask yourself some questions, and understand some of the principals behind the system.

What can Pilates do for me?

This quote from Joseph Pilates regarding one of the many benefits of Pilates sums it up nicely:         “A uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure.”

This is an exciting concept to me. At this point in my life, striving for a flat stomach, while honorable, is not enough to inspire my workouts. I want my workouts to give me that spontaneous zest and pleasure while carrying out the daily chores of my life. The Pilates Method achieves this with the simple concept of symmetrical training. The majority of musculoskeletal conditions and injuries are due to poor alignment and asymmetries in the body and the way we train. By focusing on equalizing all planes of the body and balancing motion and strength, Pilates will leave you with more energy and an efficient way to manage chronic pain, possibly even say goodbye to it. You will find yourself longer, leaner, and far more able to handle life’s daily stressors. Many of our Club Pilates Middletown clients say things like, "I never thought I could feel this good again." Or, "I sleep better now." Or comments like, "I have so much more energy since I started here." Or, "I'm only in my first month of pilates and my friends are already commenting that I look like I lost weight."

Is Pilates a journey I can embark on?

This is a path open to all levels of fitness. Pilates can challenge and improve athletic performance, but as a teacher for over fifteen years, I can say that I have seen leaps and bounds in populations looking for more therapeutic goals or changes in their bodies. The important thing any practitioner should be willing to do, is to know your needs and goals and what you want out of this practice. With consistency, you can achieve everything that Pilates has to offer. You can lean out, improve posture, strength and flexibility, breathe better, and have more energy. Club Pilates Middletown has seven signature class formats and four unique levels of classes. We have a workout that will work for you!
