LONG BRANCH – What was supposed to be time of reflection, renewal and looking to the future became an evening of horror for a Long Branch couple. With about fifteen minutes remaining in 2017, a 911 call came in about shots being fired. Police arrived on the scene about a minute later. The son, 16, shot to death his parents, his sister and another person. He used a registered semi-automatic weapon at their home at 635 Wall Street in Long Branch NJ.

The shooter will be charged with four counts of homicide, they said. A brother and grandfather were able to escape the home unharmed.

"It's a terribly tragic incident" said the Monmouth County Prosecutor. When questioned by media about the gun and the call, authorities said, "Thankfully, the arrest occurred without incident. It was very quick. Someone else (other than the shooter) placed the 911 call."

Among the deceased are the suspect’s father, Steven Kologi, 44; mother Linda Kologi, 42; sister Brittany Kologi, 18; and family acquaintance, Mary Schultz, 70, of Oakhurst Parkway in Ocean Township. A resident living down the street said she "heard the gunshots".

A joint investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and Long Branch Police Department continues, but it appears the 16-year-old boy used a Century Arms semi-automatic rifle to kill his victims. The teenager was taken into custody without incident.

According to a report by Fox News, an older brother of the New Jersey teen wrote a tribute to his slain family members on social media, urging others “to give the ones you love an extra kiss or I love you.”

Steven Kologi Jr., the brother who escaped, told Instagram followers he had “the greatest parents I could ask for.”

“Never once was I without a hot meal or a roof over my head,” he wrote in a statement that was reposted by a Facebook user.

“They made sure Christmas came every year although they struggled financially. I cannot even describe the type of people they were so just believe me when I say how great they were.”

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Detective Andrea Tozzi, of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office at 800-533-7443, or Detective Michael Verdadiero of the Long Branch Police Department at 732-222-1000."

Filters remove particles from the air, keeping ...
