ROXBURY, NJ - The brave of heart and thick of skin can help special needs kids on Saturday by going for a quick swim in icy Lake Hopatcong.
Meteorologists are calling for 25 degrees and snow, but that won't stop generous and courageous people from participating in the sixth annual "Leap in the Lake," an event created by the Lake Hopatcong Elks Lodge #782.
The coldwater swim is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Hopatcong State Park. There is a $50 minimum donation to participate.
Proceeds will go toward the Elks lodge's special children's committee and other youth activity programs, according to the lodge. Some of it wll be earmarked toward sending children to the Elks Camp Moore camp for special-needs kids.
After their frigid foray, the chilled bathers can thaw out at a "post leap party" at the Elks Lodge on Howard Boulevard in Mt. Arlington. The party, free for participants, runs from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and additional tickets are available for $20 each.
Participants will also receive a "Leap in the Lake" shirt. There will be food, raffles, prizes music and more.
