JERSEY CITY, NJ - An allegedly intoxicated man brandishing a knife was shot by responding Jersey City Police after he reportedly lunged at officers in the Heights on Friday.
On August 7, shortly after 6:00 p.m., JCPD responded to 25 Hopkins Avenue on the report of an intoxicated person fighting. Unconfirmed social media reports indicate an individual was indecently exposed and pounding on doors along the block.
Upon arrival, officers found a male armed with a knife, who ignored multiple requests by officers to put the weapon down. Officers then deployed OC Spray (pepper spray), at which point the man lunged at officers with the knife. A preliminary investigation by the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office has revealed that one officer discharged his weapon striking the individual. The assailant was then transported to the Jersey City Medical Center for treatment.
The individual, whose name has not yet been released by officials, has been charged with Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purposes, and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, working in conjunction with the State Attorney General.
