JERSEY CITY, NJ - With his endorsement of several candidates running against those supported by the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO), Ward E Councilman James Solomon has once again shown off his credentials as a political maverick.

In a social media post in which he quoted Rep. Ayana Pressely, a New England progressive, saying that “change can’t wait,” Solomon endorsed Hector Osegurea in his candidacy against Rep. Albio Sires in the 8th Congressional district – which covers most significant portions of Hudson County, including portions of Jersey City and Bayonne.

Osegurea would be accessible and accountable to the people, not the political establishment, Solomon argued.

The endorsements drew the rebuke of Michael Soliman, a longtime Hudson County party operative whose experience and influence has made his a familiar name in the inner circle of politics across New Jersey. “Congressman Sires has always fought for progressive causes and working families and has stood up to Donald Trump,” Soliman said, giving a nod to the many endorsements Sires has received from labor unions in past days.

“It’s a shame that James Solomon would abandon a progressive champion like Congressman Sires and his freeholder team- not to mention his own values- to pander for votes.”

Solomon did lend his support to HCDO-supported Freeholder Jerry Walker but veered back off the line getting behind freeholder challengers Eleana Little, and Ron Bautista.

Little is running against Yraida Aponte-Lipski in Jersey City, who was selected to replace Joel Torres as HDCO supported candidate in Jersey City – after a heavy behind the scenes conflict with state Senator Brian Stack, who supported Torres. Bautista is challenging longtime Hoboken based Freeholder Anthony Romano.

The mostly mail in election is July 7 with ballots mostly being received by voters earlier this month.
