JERSEY CITY, NJ - Citing a low patient population and ease of access to nearby Hoboken University Medical Center, CarePoint officials have announced that Christ Hospital’s OB-GYN Department will close on July 31. In a report it was stated that seven staff members have been moved to the Hoboken University Medical Center, 16 have been reassigned, and 17 employees have been laid off.
Three years ago, CarePoint established the Hoboken facility as the primary location for a number of services including prenatal and birthing, saying that centralizing some of their services was financially sound.
The announcement comes as CarePoint is seeking to sell off its hospitals and is locked in a conflict with Secaucus based Hudson Regional Hospital (HRH) which has purchased the land under two of the hospitals and has currently bid to purchase the land and operations at Christ Hospital.
Ron Simoncini, a spokesperson for HRH surmised that the announcement was a warning sign that the hospital could be on the verge of closing.
