JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Jersey City Police Department is investigating the death of a man who died in the early hours of Saturday after being hit by exploding fireworks, according to law enforcement sources familiar with the incident.

The incident, said to have taken place just after midnight in the area of the Booker T. Washington Apartments, comes as cities across the state, including Jersey City and Paterson, have been cracking down on illegal fireworks in past weeks, concerned that their increased use pose not only a nuisance to residents but also a safety hazard.

Two men were arrested and charged with aggravated arson in Hoboken on June 22 after allegedly aiming fireworks at a residential building.
