January 2020 marks the 47th year of Art Show: Bedford, an eagerly awaited annual community event that unites the arts with charitable giving.   The art show features a blend of contemporary and traditional artwork in all media and is a fundraiser for many local non-profits. The event will be held in the Fellowship Hall at St. Matthew’s Church in Bedford, at 382 Cantitoe Street, over the course of two weekends in late January and early February, 2020.

The show kicks off with the Preview Party on Friday, January 24, followed by an Exhibition and Sale on Saturday and Sunday, January 25 and 26. The Exhibition and Sale reopens the following weekend, starting on Friday, Jan. 31, and continues on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 1 and 2.

Tara Deeks and Susannah Leighton are co-chairing the event.

“We want to emphasize that one hundred percent of the proceeds from this art show are donated to local charities.” said Deeks.

“This past year we honed our mission to focus on providing food, shelter and support to the most needy and marginalized members of this region.”  Leighton added, “Although hosted by St. Matthew’s, our goal is to galvanize the entire community to support many worthy local charities while also celebrating the arts.”  Another committee member, Robyn McKree, stated, “Not only do patrons receive a beautiful piece of art, they also have the joy of knowing that their purchase has a positive impact on the community.”  Christopher Brescia of CB Gallery in Katonah will assist in curating the show and will introduce some additional exciting new artists to the current roster of the show’s many exhibitors.  

Organizations to be supported in 2020 include:  A-Home, Abbott House, the Boys and Girls Club of northern Westchester, Community Center of Northern Westchester, Endeavor Therapeutic Riding, Hope’s Door, Hour Children, Midnight Run, Mt. Kisco Interfaith Food Pantry, Neighbor’s Link, Part of the Solution “POTS”, Rehabilitation Through the Arts, Westchester Exceptional Children’s School, and VNA & Hospice Care Foundation of Hudson Valley.  Two of these charities support the disadvantaged through art therapy.  Rehabilitation Through the Arts, an organization that provides volunteers who train inmates in prison to develop skills in the visual and performing arts, has been proven to reduce recidivism.  And our gift to the Westchester Exceptional Children’s School is supports an art program for children with special needs.  A display of art produced by these challenged students will be on display throughout the show.

Over forty artists have been selected to participate in the juried show, exhibiting a collection of unique paintings, photographs, sculpture, pottery, glass, wood carvings and jewelry.  Acclaimed local watercolor artist Shelley Dell has specially created a stunning work “2020 Vision” to illustrate the graphics connected with the event.  Her 8x8 inch watercolor painting is packed with intriguing detail and symbols relating to the way in which we see ourselves.   Portfolios and bios of the featured artists are available on our website. 

As a new feature to this year’s show, all participating artists have been invited to display two 5x7 inch panels depicting St. Matthew’s Church, in addition to their other artwork.  “It will be fascinating to see St. Matthew’s through the eyes of so many diverse artists,” stated Ms. Leighton.

2020 Art Show judges include Peter MacGill of Pace/MacGill Galleries, Cybele Maylone, Executive Director of the Aldrich Museum, and Kim Henrikson, Executive Director of the Center for Contemporary Printmaking.   Art awards include The Mary Berol Award, sponsored by Marilen Tilt, Best Painting, sponsored by April Foley, Best in Show, sponsored by the Women of St. Matthew’s, Best Mixed Media sponsored by the Katonah Art and Frame Shop and Best Photograph, sponsored by the Paint Box of Bedford Hills.

Co-chairs Tara Deeks and Susannah Leighton are assisted by a Committee including the following volunteers:  Julie Bacon, Jenny Convery, April Foley, Sally Ketchum, Diana Knoblauch, Ursula LaMott, Terry Long, Robyn McCree, Betsy Meyer, Laurie Sturz, Marilen Tilt, Melissa Vincent, and Caroline Walker.

The Friday night Preview Party will be catered by Happiness Is. Plentiful hors d’oeuvres will be accompanied by champagne, wine and beer provided by The Wine Connection and The Study Fine Wines. Lively music will be performed by Mark Weigel’s band, DogBone.  Tickets can be obtained in advance for $125 or at the door for $150.

On Friday, January 31 at 10:30 a.m., please attend Coffee and Conversation, a free event accompanied by refreshments that will feature a short talk by Kim Henrikson of the Center for Contemporary Printmaking.  Also on Friday, January 31st, Jessica Miller will paint on-the-spot portraits in acrylic priced at $200 a piece.  Please sign up on our website for a half hour slot to have a portrait painted by this talented artist.

On Saturday, February 1st, Robert Alexander Boyle will be available at 12:00 pm  to evaluate any art or antique items you may like to bring for his expert examination.  Alex has worked for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, PBS, galleries and an auction house as well as having published numerous articles on 19th and 20th century American painting.   Don’t miss out on this opportunity to find out the worth of treasures you may own. 

On Saturday, February 1nd at 5:00 p.m., all are invited to attend a free special event with wine and hors d’oeuvres featuring a lecture with slide show by Samuel Sachs II on the fascinating topic of “Fakes and Forgeries”.  Sam Sachs is the former Director of the Detroit Institute of Art and subsequently served as Director of the Frick Collection.  His is currently the President of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation that has awarded nearly $77,000,000 to over 4,600 visual artists in 78 countries since its inception.  

Hours for the show are as follows: The Preview Party on Friday, Jan. 24th, is from 6:30 to 9 p.m.; the show is open Saturday, Jan. 25th, Sunday, Jan. 26th, the following Friday, Jan. 31st, Saturday, Feb. 1st, and Sunday, Feb. 2nd,  from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.   The Special Event on Saturday, Feb. 1nd is from 5:00-6:00 p.m.  Daily admission to the show and sale is free.
