CROSS RIVER, N.Y. – Senior Emma Finne is a member of the John Jay Bowling team. As of Wednesday, Jan. 22, the girls’ team’s record to start the season was 8-4.

Your team has jumped out to a hot start. What has been the key to your success?

The key to starting out successful is believing in yourself and your team. If you don’t believe in each other or encourage each other, the team will not be successful. My team and I also take practice very seriously. That helps with being successful at matches. At practice I try my best to work on my alignment with the lanes so that I can work on throwing my ball to the pocket of the first and second pin. At practice, I tend to mainly work on getting spares.

What are your individual and team goals for the season?

My individual goal for this season is to increase my average every time I bowl. I try to accomplish this by bowling my best at every match and taking my time with lining myself up with the lanes. The team’s goal is to increase the team average to 650. We would like it to get up to a 650 because once we hit 650 and keep it at 650, we can go to sectionals in Fishkill.

How old were you when you started bowling and what got you started?

I started bowling when I was 15 years old. I started bowling because Mr. [Paul] Plutzker, our coach, was my Earth science teacher in my sophomore year. He talked about how people should sign up for the bowling team and how much fun it is. I went that night and signed up. I decided to do bowling because my sophomore year was my first year at John Jay High School. I figured it would be a great way to meet new people, make friends, have fun, and I knew it would look good on my transcript for college.

What is your favorite thing about being on the John Jay bowling team?

My favorite thing about being on the John Jay bowling team is how competitive matches can get. When we bowl, we go against many different teams at many different skill levels. I love competing against other schools that have a similar average to ours because it’s a rush. You get a rush of adrenaline when you’re on the lane lining yourself up. Once you throw your ball you become anxious because you have to wait to see where your ball goes, and hope it goes in the place you wanted it to.

What is something about being a bowler that people might not know?

A lot of people don’t realize how much time bowling consumes. Matches can be up to three and a half hours long.

Who has been your biggest role model over the years and what have you learned from them?

My biggest role model over the years has definitely been

Do you know what you want to study in college? If yes, what are you planning on studying and why?

In college I want to major in childhood education (grades 1-6). I have been studying this for two years at Putnam-Northern Westchester BOCES in Yorktown and love it. I want to study childhood education because children are so eager to learn new things. I want to be able to teach children and help them grow. I also want to become a teacher because I love children. I currently intern at Meadow Pond Elementary School in South Salem. Working with the students at my internship makes me so happy. They look up to me to help them with whatever they need. It could be completing a math problem, needing assistance with pronouncing a word, counting money, or even as simple as tying a shoelace. I also want to minor in early childhood special education.

How do you get prepared for a match?

I get prepared for a match by listening to music and relaxing. I like to go into a match relaxed because if you go in stressed, you will not be focused.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

If I could have one superpower it would be to time travel. I would love to go back in time and live a day in the early 1900s.

What is something about yourself people would be surprised to learn?

Something that people may not know about me is that I hate the snow and all forms of winter weather. Snow is annoying and gets in the way.

What is your favorite place to visit on vacation and why?

My favorite place to vacation is my grandparent’s house in upstate New York. I enjoy vacationing up there because life up there is very different from life in Westchester. While upstate, we do many different activities. Some of these include fishing; ATV riding; going to the amish to buy fresh vegetables, fruit, and eggs; going to the local waterfall; and much more.

What is your favorite place to eat locally?

My favorite place to eat locally would have to be the Bedford dinner. I love their chocolate chip pancakes. They are always so fluffy and chocolaty.

What’s the go-to app on your phone and why?

My go-to app on my phone would have to be Snapchat. I love using Snapchat. I use it to communicate with my friends. I think the filters and the way you can edit your photos on Snapchat with filters and stickers is so cool.

For a young athlete growing up in the Katonah-Lewisboro school district, what would you tell them about the experience of being part of the bowling team and why should they go out for the team?

For a young athlete growing up in the Katonah- Lewisboro school district, I would like people to know that being a part of the bowling team is very fun. You have a blast at all the matches. You also build many friendships. I think that people should go out and try out for the team because it’s fun, you make friendships, and it looks great on your transcript for college if you compete in more than one season!
