CROSS RIVER, N.Y. – John Jay graduate Isaiah Rust was a defenseman on the varsity boys lacrosse team.

How old were you when you playing lacrosse and how did you get started?

I was 12 years old and in the sixth grade when I started playing lacrosse. My father was a crease midfielder and played for the Syracuse University men’s lacrosse team. I decided that I wanted to play lacrosse after watching many televised college lacrosse games with him.

As a senior on the team, how much did you value being a leader?

I love being a leader because I believe it is the most important job when being on a team. As a veteran on the team, it is my job to make sure our younger players understand certain concepts. It is important that I lead by example on and off the field in hope that it makes an impression to become successful in the classroom and on the field.

What is your favorite team activity, pregame or postgame ritual that you share with your teammates?

My favorite pregame ritual along with some of my teammates is taking a big nap on the bus or at home before our warmups.

Who has been your biggest role model over the years and what have you learned from them?

My dad and mom. I have learned from them that determination and a relentless attitude will get you to places you want to go. It is something that I hope to use to reach my goals.

Tell us one thing about yourself that not a lot of people know?

I don’t like seafood, but I love going fishing.

Do you plan on joining the lacrosse team in college? If yes, where are you going and why did you pick that school?

This fall I will be taking my talents and academic career to Duval County in Jacksonville, Fla., and joining the Jacksonville University men’s lacrosse team. I picked this school because of the amazing city and warm weather. The high academic and athletic reputation of Jacksonville University was what I wanted as well. Go Phins.

Do you know what you want to study in college? If yes, what and why?

I plan on studying business in college. I believe that majoring in business will give me plentiful opportunities down the road and hopefully to a point where I can own my own company one day.

Who is your favorite professional athlete and pro or college sports team?

My favorite professional athlete is The King, LeBron James, and my favorite pro sports team is the New York Yankees.

What is your favorite music to listen to warming up for a meet?

I don’t like listening to music when I warm up. The silence and sounds on the lacrosse field are the only things I want to hear when warming up.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

I would have teleportation. I could teleport to the past and the future. I could see all the awesome things that I wouldn’t be able to see and make a difference in different time periods as well.

If you could pick one place to visit on vacation that you’ve never been to, where would you go and why?

I would visit South Africa because of the amazing wildlife, and the awesome culture in Cape Town.

What is your favorite food to eat before or after a game?

My favorite food to eat before a game is two scrambled eggs.

Best place to eat in Katonah-Lewisboro and why?

Peppino’s. The food is mouth-watering and I would eat at it 24/7 if I could.

Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat or Instagram? Why?

Instagram because it is simple and Facebook gets hacked a lot.

For a young athlete growing up in Katonah-Lewisboro, what would you tell them about the experience of being part of the lacrosse program and why should they go out for the team?

Being a part of the lacrosse program has been the best experience of my life. I made so many friends and learned important fundamentals to being a good lacrosse player. The people in this program want to help you in any way possible to get you where you want to go. You’ll have the best memories, best friends and will be the best lacrosse player you can possibly be when you try for this team.

Summer Camp

Recently, I enjoyed teaching a one-week creative writing camp for teens at Katonah Art Center. For three hours each afternoon, six middle and high school students joined me to learn new ways to discover story inspiration, create unique characters, and explore writing in different genres of fiction. By the end of our first afternoon of writing together, the campers had already bonded. These kids ...

A (Burnt) Toast to Love and Marriage, on the Rocks

In its first few moments, sitcom-style comedy “Clever Little Lies” grabs audience attention right away, with one of the most revealing wardrobe changes you’ll ever see on stage. It is done modestly but just provocatively enough to elicit vocal appreciation from amused patrons.

The fast-paced play, starring Richard Kline of TV comedy classic “Three’s ...

Exploring Health and Wellness

I’ve decided to devote a lot of time this summer to exploring health and wellness. Being a person who has no preoccupation with age but still has a young child, this is probably not a bad idea. However, full disclosure: we have launched a new healthy lifestyle magazine here at Halston Media, so my pursuit isn’t always just for me. No complaints, though, because I am just embarking on ...

The Adventures of Superdog

I was always very impressed that my dog could bark on command and come when I called his name, until I read in the newspaper about a dog that saved his owner’s life by calling 9-1-1. Apparently, when his owner had a seizure, the dog pushed a speed-dial button for 9-1-1, barked into the receiver for help, and then opened the door when the responders arrived.

Honestly, though, it’s ...

Twelve-score and one year ago

Last week, on the 4th of July, America turned 241 years old. Did you bring a birthday present? What do you get for the country that has everything? It has amber waves of grain, it has purple mountain majesties, it has oceans white with foam. Most of these  assets are highly leveraged to the Chinese at the moment, so you’d better get out and see them now because they’re planning ...
