CROSS RIVER, N.Y. – Senior goalie Nick Petrella has been a dominant force in net this season for the John Jay hockey team, which improved to 17-1-1 with a 3-0 shutout of North Rockland on Monday, Feb. 10. Petrella has logged 753 minutes over 17 games, going 15-1-1 with a minuscule 1.02 GAA (goals-against average) and a .947 save percentage. He has recorded six shutouts, including a 60-minute scoreless overtime tie against West Seneca West on Dec. 7.
How old were you when you started playing hockey and what got you started?
I was around 8 years old when I started playing hockey. I think it was a combination of one of my best friends, Jack Browne, trying to get me to play, along with a love for watching Dominik Hasek highlights.
What is your favorite thing about being on the John Jay hockey team?
My favorite thing about being on the team is getting to play on a team that really takes every practice and every game seriously.
What are your individual and team goals for the rest of the season?
For the rest of the season my only goal for myself is simply to keep improving and, of course, for our team to continue winning.
Who has been your biggest role model over the years and what have you learned from them?
My biggest role model over the years would have to be a former John Jay goalie Wendell Isom. He was one of two starters when I first made the team and we formed a good bond. I was able to look up to him as well as learn from him. Watching how he handled himself before big games has definitely helped me this year.
Do you know what you want to study in college? If yes, what are you planning on studying and why?
I’m not sure what I want to study in college yet.
What music do you listen to before a game?
I don’t listen to my own music before the games I just listen to whatever my teammates are playing on the speaker.
Do you have any favorite pre- or post-game rituals you share with your teammates?
Before the game I don’t really have a ritual. I will just stretch and think about the game. After the game we like to play music on the bus ride home.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
If I could have one superpower, I would definitely choose to be able to fly. Being able to go anywhere I wanted at my own will would definitely give the ability to fly an edge over other superpowers.
What is something about yourself people would be surprised to learn?
Something that might be surprising about myself is that I’m a Buffalo Sabres and Bills fan even though I was born in Westchester.
What is your favorite place to visit on vacation and why?
My favorite place to go on vacation is Nantucket Island. My family has been going up there every summer for as long as I can remember, it’s become a second home to me.
What is your favorite place to eat locally?
My favorite place to eat locally is Village Social in Mount Kisco. Their short-rib grilled cheese is one of my top five favorite things to eat.
What’s the go-to app on your phone and why?
My go-to app on my phone is Snapchat. It’s how I communicate with most of my friends.
For a young athlete growing up in the John Jay School District, what would you tell them about the experience of being part of the hockey team and why should they go out for the team?
I would tell a young athlete in the distract that the hockey team has a level of intimacy and bonding that no other sport replicates. We have one of the longest seasons and countless hours of practice and long bus rides where the team comes together unlike any other sport.
