CROSS RIVER, N.Y. – Junior Samantha Spieler has been on the John Jay varsity ski team since eighth grade. She’s qualified for the State Championships and the Eastern Regionals since ninth grade. This past year, she took gold in slalom and was second for Ski Meister at Sectionals (team went undefeated and won the sectional championship) and at states, grabbed sixth-place in slalom earning her All-State honors. Spieler also races for Hunter Mountain, competing in the Empire State Winter Games also since ninth grade.
She is committed to play lacrosse at Merrimack College.
How old were you when you started skiing and what got you started?
I started skiing when I was 4 years old and started racing when I was 8.
What was your favorite thing about being on the ski team at John Jay?
My favorite part of ski team is our coach, Chris [Reinke]. He always finds a way to make even the harshest of days fun.
Do you have favorite team activity or pregame/postgame ritual that you share with your teammates?
Our favorite team activity is on rainy days during strength and conditioning season, playing [Lady GaGa’s] “Just Dance” at North Salem. Or after ski races we all go into Thunder Ridge and get curly fries.
Who has been your biggest role model over the years and what have you learned from them?
That would have to be my mom. She’s always doing the right thing when people are and aren’t looking.
Do you have any goals for the upcoming season?
Goals for the upcoming season would to repeat as league champs and as section champs, but also to get in Top 3 at states and, personally, to be All-State again.
Do you plan on continuing to play sports in college?
Currently, I am committed to play D1 lacrosse at Merrimack College.
Do you know what you want to study in college?
I hope to pursue a future in sports medicine.
What is your favorite music to listen to warming up for a game?
Before a big race I will shuffle my “liked” songs and just try to get hype to the song. I need my blood flowing and my mind to be clear.
What’s something about yourself people might not know?
Before races, I pray on the chairlift. I pray that everyone makes it down safe, no one dies, and that my team and I do well.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
I would love to have the ability to teleport. I am always in the need for a ride.
Where is your favorite place to go on vacation and why?
My favorite place to vacation is Jay Peak in Vermont. They have great tree skiing, and just a fun lodge. I got stuck in the waterslide there once, but it was fine because the mountain made up for it.
Favorite place to eat locally?
Favorite local place to eat is the Reading Room in Katonah. My favorite meal is the avocado toast with a chocolate milk—great for fueling the body!
What is the go-to app on your phone?
Tik Tok. It’s filled with all of these funny videos that make me laugh.
Do you have a current favorite book, movie or TV show?
Favorite TV show is “Grey’s Anatomy.” I’ve been watching it since sixth grade. Every new season is always something different; never repeats itself.
