CROSS RIVER, N.Y. – John Jay’s hockey team made quick work of the combined Brewster/Yorktown/Somers/North Salem squad in a 7-0 rout on Dec. 5 at Brewster Ice Arena.

The Indians received 4 goals and 1 assist from sophomore sensation Tyler Wishart. Senior Jack Browne had 1 goal and 3 assists.

“Jack and Tyler are working well together,” said John Jay coach Alex Smith. “They both hustle and play both ends of the ice. Tyler has a scorer’s touch and Jack has been reading and anticipating really well.”

Browne opened the scoring five minutes into the game with Doug Style and Wishart picking up the assists. Wishart gave John Jay a 2-0 lead with 5:11 left in the first period. Browne and Charlie Oestreicher notched the assists.

John Jay exploded for 4 goals in the second period to take a 6-0 lead. Wishart had 2 goals in the period with Kyle Petschek and Mattie Wierl scoring the other goals. Petschek’s goal, which made it 4-0 with 10:43 left in the period, occurred when he deflected a shot by Justin DeLucia.

“In the first period, BYSNS did a good job of clogging up the neutral zone and we tried to stickhandle through it,” Smith said. “In the second, we dumped the puck in and took advantage of our speed.”

Wishart closed out the scoring in the third period. Oestreicher and Styles finished the game with two assists apiece.

Nick Petrella made 16 saves in net for the Indians.

“Our defense shut down BYSNS in the third with quick puck movement and not over handling,” Smith said. “Nick Petrella has been great in goal thus far.”

The Indians skated to a 0-0 tie with West Seneca West the next day at the Ice Hutch. It was a rematch of last year’s Division 2 regional championship game.

John Jay (2-0-1) returns to the ice when they host Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14.
