CROSS RIVER, N.Y. – John Jay wrestling clinched their sixth consecutive league title with a 60-21 drubbing of Walter Panas on Thursday, Jan. 23.
The Indians, 15-4 overall and 6-0 in their league, will host Division III divisionals on Saturday, Feb. 8, at John Jay High School.
“I tell them the entire season is just practice,” said coach Bill Swertfager.
Standouts this season include Luca Duva, Gavin Fiacco, Max Gryzmala, Matt Ferrer and Ian Gallagher.
“They have the most wins and make us a very good dual meet team,” said coach Bill Swertfager.
The coach also cited the unexpected success of eighth grader Cameron Wierl. At 17-7, said Swertfager, “the 120 pounder is in a very tough weight class and has done spectacularly.”
Swertfager has high hopes for his team this postseason.
“I could easily see us having 14 or 15 kids qualifying for the sectionals,” Swertfager said.
He sees more of the same for his dual meet stars, while Will Stein at 195 and senior captain Jimmy Norris at 160 are possible wildcards.
“They are both dangerous wrestlers and could make some noise,” he said.
As for going the distance at the states, the longtime coach singled out Fiacco and Ferrer, but not necessarily because he puts any of his wrestlers above others on the team.
“They don’t have kids that are unbeatable in their weight class,” he reasoned.
On the other hand, Swertfager is definitely open to any and all surprises.
“I can’t wait,” he said.
