Enclosed is a chart that tracks the KLSD budget and enrollment figures since the 1999-2000 school year through 2021-22. All data used has come from the budget books as published by the district.

The budget has increased 100 percent over that period, while the student population has decreased 25.7 percent (it actually plummeted 29.3 percent from its peak in 2002-03). The cost per student increased from $14,517 in 1999-2000 to $38,995 for the school year 2021-22—a whopping 168.6 percent increase.

Since 2006-07—when the percent change in the cost per student started to be higher than the percent change in the budget—the administration and the school board have failed miserably in taking corrective action to address the continuing decline in enrollment by proposing and passing ever increasing budgets.
