Death Cafe

Death Café Westchester will hold its next meeting in the Katonah Village Library.

Facilitated by local volunteers, Death Café offers an opportunity to come to a nonjudgmental, friendly gathering to discuss end of life. When individuals gather in small groups to exchange thoughts and experiences, this shared information and exploration transform anxiety about death and dying so life can be lived more fully. (This is a discussion group rather than a counseling session for those actively grieving.)

Group originator and moderator Barbara Sarah, an oncology social worker and Goldens Bridge resident, has organized many Death Cafés in Westchester and Ulster counties.

Death Café Westchester is part of the international Death Café movement, designed to “to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives” (deathcafe.com).

No registration is required for this free event. Coffee and snacks will be provided.

Getting the Call

August 21, 2019

People ask me all the time: “How did you get into journalism?”

I think it fascinates people why anyone would choose such a thankless profession where the only certainty is uncertainty. Anyone lucky enough to even find work in this endangered field knows all about long hours, endless flak from critics, and living paycheck to paycheck.

The good news is that my blood work is excellent and my blood pressure is fantastic. The bad news is that I’m shrinking! When did this happen? I was always one of the tallest kids in my class.

Happy 50th, Woodstock Alumni… We Are Golden

On Aug. 15, 1969, I finished the Friday shift at my summer job at Times Square Stores (TSS) in Hempstead, Long Island, picked up a couple of friends in my dad’s Plymouth, and off we went to the Catskills for (as the publicity poster proclaimed) “An Aquarian Exposition in White Lake, N.Y.,” better known simply as “Woodstock.”

In the past half-century, it has ...

Life as we know it

You may have heard that some knucklehead on the internet posted an invitation for other knuckleheads on the internet to “storm Area 51” because “they can’t stop all of us!” This post is basically a classified ad, since Area 51 is classified as a highly classified area owned by the Air Force, presumably used to test experimental aircraft and weapons. It’s nearby ...
