NEW DATE: The Space Race 1957-1975 at the Somers Library

The Soviet Union stunned the world in 1957, by putting the first artificial satellite into Earth orbit. By 1961, the Russians had also launched the first manned spacecraft and sent the first robotic probes to the Moon. In May 1961, President John F. Kennedy announced his daring plan for the American space program: landing a man on the Moon before the end of the decade. This presentation is packed with historic photographs and vintage concept art. Relive the dramatic “Space Race,” from the pioneering Mercury and Gemini flights to the first Apollo Moon landings and the lesser-known scientific missions that followed. Along the way, you will learn about the visionaries and scientists who made space travel possible, and the American astronauts who boldly traveled “Where no one has gone before.” Registration is required; please go to our online calendar here or call 914-232-5717.

Our programs are funded by The Friends of the Library - thanks for your support!

November 28, 2021

Last week, I received a phone call from a client and friend who said to me that everyone always thanks the small businesses, but seldom does anyone thank the residents who support the small businesses.

So, he urged me to reach out to our readers and say “thank you” while also simultaneously thanking the small businesses that are so supportive of our communities.

I personally ...

Cuddle Up

One of my favorite childhood stuffed animals was a green and yellow frog. Froggy was the perfect size to hold and cuddle at bedtime. He had black and white eyes, a large red smile and a yellow fabric crown attached to the top of his head.

Froggy held the place of honor perched on top of my pillows after I made my bed each morning before going off to school. A well-traveled companion, I ...

The Catalog Queen

One day, I greeted my mailman at the front door before he had a chance to actually place the mail into my box. His bag swung from his shoulder onto my front stoop, and reaching inside he started sorting his pack. He thumbed and thumbed through the pile and then said, “Here, could you hold these while I get out the rest?”

He went back into his satchel two more times and kept loading ...

GeniuSS

Those not enamored of musical theater might have noticed the to-do on Thanksgiving weekend regarding the death of an entertainment figure.

Given the exhaustion of superlatives strewn about news media and social media, a theater-agnostic might have wondered if some kind of deity had left the stage and passed into the next realm of consciousness.

Yeah, that’s pretty much what ...

Significant consequences for not having last will and testament

While the merits of having a last will and testament versus a revocable living trust are often debated, the consequences of not having a last will and testament are less frequently discussed.

It should be remembered that a last will only disposes of assets one has in their name alone on their date of death. The last will does not dispose of assets that are titled jointly with another (such as ...
