He delivered her mail and she couldn’t resist a man in uniform. This week we celebrate Les and Bette Bischoff’s 70th wedding anniversary. The enduring romantic love of my grandparents is as much at the heart of our family as is their farm in Oneonta, New York.
Grandma and Grandpa lived their young, wild and free days in Hartsdale, NY before building a home in Cross River, NY to raise their young family of three spirited, beautiful daughters. My grandfather is a builder, as are so many members of my family now that I think about it. Perhaps that’s because he taught us that building is really about making a home for loved ones to gather throughout the seasons. My childhood is filled with memories celebrating Christmas, Easter, and many birthdays at their home on School House Road and of the farm, riding quads or sledding, watching 90 acres turn into an oasis of nature and fun, from just a dream and a little help from family.
At 94 and 89, their love story is timeless, they are still falling in love. Bette is more of a gem than ever, lighting up any room she enters and always bringing a party with her love of dance. Les is a walking legend, at 94 he is still a true craftsman, whittling delicate Christmas ornaments and building toys for his soon-to-be eight great-grandchildren.
We look forward to celebrating when we’re able and to raise a glass to the greatest love around. Cheers to you Grandma and Grandpa. We all love you so very much
