CROSS RIVER, N.Y. – Jordan Schwartz, an accomplished science research student, culminated his meritorious high school career being named salutatorian of the Class of 2019.
During his time at John Jay High School, Schwartz competed and placed in a number of science research competitions, such as the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair and the Science Olympiad. He has received a New York State Scholarship for Academic Excellence and the Harvard-Radcliffe College Book Award. He has also been named a National Merit Commended Scholar.
Schwartz has a sister, Maya, and a dog, Lucy. In school, he enjoys studying STEM subjects and playing in the jazz and wind ensembles.
What is your favorite subject in school and why?
I have always enjoyed the STEM subjects in school. My favorite class this year was probably Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism. The reliance on calculus concepts and connection to the real world made this class extremely interesting and unique.
Who inspires you the most and why?
My grandfathers have been an inspiration to me. They are both engineers and have taught me how to think like an engineer and approach problems methodically.
What do you enjoy most about the Katonah-Lewisboro schools and community?
As a STEM student, I enjoyed the variety of opportunities offered at John Jay to pursue my love for science. From the Science Research Program to the Science Olympiad Team, the Katonah-Lewisboro community has provided me with hands-on experience with like-minded students.
What is your most memorable high school experience?
My most memorable high school experience was participating in the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band with Mr. Richardson.
What are your plans after you graduate from Katonah-Lewisboro?
Next year, I plan to study electrical and computer engineering at Duke University with a possible minor in computer science or finance.
What are some of your favorite hobbies/extracurricular activities?
Most of my hobbies encompass science and technology. For the past few years, I have built, designed, and programmed multiple drones. I also enjoy skiing, coding, and powerlifting.
Where is your favorite place to eat in the Katonah-Lewisboro area?
I love to eat at Restaurant 123 for a fancy meal, and for a local lunch, I enjoy Salsa Fresca.
Tell us something about yourself that people would be surprised to learn.
I have been practicing cardistry and magic for the past few years. I can also solve the Rubik’s Cube in less than a minute
Is there a place you’d most like to visit?
I love skiing and have always wanted to visit Jackson Hole in Wyoming.
Who are some of your favorite musicians?
I enjoy listening to jazz music, particularly the Big Phat Band.
What is your favorite show to binge?
I don’t really watch that much TV and do not have a favorite show.
What is the go-to app on your phone?
Smart News. This app combines many different news providers, including specific science and technology feeds, in one place.
