The Somers and Lakeland Central School Districts have announced students will be working through Spring Break because of an executive order from Governor Cuomo threatening school's state aid.
In a letter to parents, Somers Superintendent Dr. Raymond Blanch said Cuomo announced that districts "must use all available vacation and snow days as distance learning days, including our spring break."
In Somers, students will continue to work remotely with teachers during the week of April 6.
"If we do not make these adjustments to our calendar, we will forfeit crucial state aid," Blanch said. "I apologize to our families and staff for any difficulty these changes may cause."
In Lakeland, Superintendent Dr. George Stone said the School Board will be "instructing our teachers to prepare a week's worth of assignments, websites, etc. and distribute to their students on Friday, April 3. This will provide students with daily work, but relieve teachers of the burden to provide instruction daily during the following week."
Additionally, there is confusion about budget planning since school board elections have been pushed back.
"In another order, the Governor has moved the date of school elections back to June 2," Stone said. "We are still awaiting clarification as to whether this includes the budget vote. We believe it does, but we do need legal guidance. For now, we will continue to keep the budget process moving forward."
This story will be updated when we hear from more districts.
