CROSS RIVER, N.Y. – John Jay senior Joey Pink has played three seasons of varsity soccer in the fall, earning All-League this year when he also served as team captain. He played one season of varsity basketball this winter, and this spring was set to be his second year on the varsity baseball team.

How are you getting through this period of social distancing? What are you doing to keep busy?

It’s pretty boring to be out of school with no sports, so I do homework, watch TV, play Xbox, and stay in shape for baseball.

How old were you when you started playing baseball and what got you started?

I started playing when I was 5 with the town tee-ball league and have played ever since.

What is your favorite thing about being on the John Jay baseball team?

My favorite thing about being on the baseball team is our trip to Disney World during spring break. We play a bunch of games but also go to the parks so it’s a really great time.

What is your favorite sports memory from your time John Jay?

My favorite sports memory at John Jay is winning our soccer playoff game this year. The previous two years we had lost that same game and it felt great to win as a senior.

Who has been your biggest role model over the years and what have you learned from them?

My dad has been my biggest role model because he encouraged me to keep playing all three sports throughout high school and pushed me forward during the long seasons.

Do you have any pre-game rituals?

I always run out to my position on the field or court to get myself focused and excited. I also always double knot my shoes.

Will you be attending college? If so, where and what will you study?

Yes, I am going to the University of Richmond to study finance.

Will you continue to play sports beyond high school?

I’m not playing anything at college, but I’ll definitely be enjoying intramural basketball.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

I would want to time-travel so I could go back to my travel teams when I was younger.

What is something about yourself people would be surprised to learn?

I surprisingly have never taken a train before.

What is your favorite place to visit on vacation and why?

Vermont. I go skiing at Mount Snow every year during winter break.

What is your favorite place to eat locally?

Empire Bagels always. They make the best sandwiches.

What’s the go-to app on your phone and why?

Instagram is my go-to app. It’s easy to use and I could scroll through my page for hours.

What TV shows/movies are you currently watching?

I’m watching “All-American” and “Grey’s Anatomy” right now.

For a young athlete growing up in the John Jay school district, what would you tell them about the experience of being on the soccer/basketball/baseball teams and why should they go out for them?

I would tell them that they should try to play as many sports as they can. Not only does it make them a better athlete, but they will also make more friends and experience more of John Jay’s great programs.
