BARDONIA, N.Y. – Led by senior Shane Martinsen, who scored his 1,000th career point in defeat, the 11th-seeded John Jay boys basketball team fought hard but fell to No. 6 Albertus Magnus, 68-65, on Friday, Feb. 21, in the opening round of the Section 1 Class A tournament.

Martinsen, who led the Indians in scoring with 15 points, reached the career milestone on a deep three-pointer in the first quarter. He also had 11 rebounds in the game.

The game against Albertus Magnus was close throughout, with John Jay trailing 22-16 after the first quarter, 39-36 after the second, and 54-48 after the third.

John Jay finally took the lead in the fourth, going up 58-57. But the home team rallied back strong, going up 67-62 with a minute to play. A three-pointer from senior Mason DiFalco (11 points, 3 assists, 2 steals) cut the deficit to 2 with just over 2 seconds to play, but time was not on John Jay’s side. A made free throw with a fraction of a second left gave Magnus a 68-65 win.
